Plot export#
On this page
Choose Export → Plot for a clean SVG or PNG figure made from calibrated points and existing fitted curves, without the source image. Graph Overlay provides the annotated JPEG/PNG alternatives; PDF reports remain separate.
Figure and series controls#
Use the four Inspector tabs to build the figure. Settings affect the clean plot; source calibration and fitted coefficients remain unchanged.
Figure#
font, plot title and its size, whole-figure aspect ratio, background, general text size, plot box, axis thickness and Axis layering. Default uses system Sans-serif; Scientific uses locally bundled Latin Modern. Both presets start with general text 18, title 28, and a white 1:1 figure with the box off. Text (1–96) and title (1–160) have independent controls. Sizes stay proportional to figure width across aspect ratios; increasing PNG resolution does not change relative lettering size. Titles wrap and centre over the plotting area, reserving clearance for top tick labels rather than hiding them. Hiding the title removes its extra space.
Series#
select a dataset or fitted-curve row, then edit its specialised plot controls below the lists. Row Export checkboxes share inclusion with Extract and the other Export views. Points and curves can be included independently, including a curve with its source points excluded. Point markers, Show connections between points, colours and line styles are separate from inclusion. Straight connections follow stored point order and are not regressions. Dataset name is a plot-only override: leave it blank to follow the source name, including later renames. It never inherits the project title or renames source data. Fits use generated model identifiers, with stable numbers for repeated models. Expand Apply sizes to all series for batch line/marker sizing; these actions preserve inclusion.
Axes#
the compact Axes / Major grid / Minor grid colour row applies to both axes and sits above the X/Y selector. Defaults are black axes/ticks/box, #dddddd major grids and #eeeeee minor grids. Use the picker, six-digit hex field or Use default colour. Hidden grids and boxes retain colours; text and data colours are independent. Select X or Y for its range, scale, label, position, padding, ticks and precision.
Labels#
choose Legend, Direct labels or None, with independent dataset/fit names. Show equations and Show R² apply to included valid fits, exclusively in the legend with black text. Choose Automatic, Below, Right or Floating legend placement. Floating legends move inside the figure: drag in Preview or focus the legend and use arrow keys (Shift for larger steps, Home to reset). Legend width manages wrapping; Reset legend position restores its starting position. Position and width are saved relative to the figure and used by SVG/PNG exports; changing aspect ratio clamps the legend inside the figure. Complete names and equations are retained; if they cannot fit, adjust width, ratio, text size or placement. Dataset name + fit name retains full names per fit; Fit names grouped by dataset groups concise model identifiers under their complete parent names. Name choices do not control curves, equations or R². An unavailable R² displays undefined. Crowded legends/direct labels need a taller or wider figure, smaller text, or fewer names; impossible layouts block export rather than clip endpoint labels.
Legend appearance has independent Legend box and Background colour choices. The box starts off and uses the existing axis colour and line thickness. Background starts Transparent: choose Colour to use the standard picker/hex field, then choose Transparent in the list or use the Transparent reset button to remove the fill. A filled legend does not require a border. Styling applies to Automatic, Below, Right and Floating legends, including wrapped names, symbols, equations and R². The legend paints above all figure content, including the plot title and axis labels. A transparent legend background lets underlying artwork show through; choose a colour to cover it. It is saved even while the legend is hidden; active non-default styling contributes to Custom detection. Older projects and preset resets start with no legend box and a transparent legend background. Complete legends that cannot fit need a taller figure, more available width, smaller text or fewer annotations; exported legends are not scrollable.
Presets and preview#
Default inherits project colours, axis labels/units, calibration scales/ranges and the project title. Scientific uses black marks/curves, open/filled marker shapes, conventional dashes and Data ranges. Both default to markers 7, series line widths 1, axes/box thickness 2, major/minor ticks on, grids off, equations/R² off and dataset names in a legend. Connections and trendline names start off. Custom reports the current state; it is not an action. Presets reset presentation, including hidden-series styles, while preserving dataset/curve inclusion. Replacing custom settings or unapplied drafts asks for confirmation; Cancel or Escape preserves them.
Scientific marker/line styles eventually repeat. A shared visible styles disclosure identifies indistinguishable included datasets and offers Edit actions. This is advisory; intentional shared styles remain exportable.
Live preview starts fitted to the whole figure. Scroll to zoom around the pointer; left- or middle-button drag pans. Fit uses the workspace fit animation (instant with reduced motion), and − / + zoom around the centre. Focus the preview and use arrow keys to pan, +/− to zoom, or 0/Home to fit. Dragging a floating legend moves the legend; middle drag always pans. Navigation changes only inspection, never axis ranges, figure geometry or output resolution. On narrow screens, switch between Controls and Preview.
In Axes, the selected axis line, ticks, numbers and title remain fully visible while other artwork dims to 30%. The Axis edit focus checkbox toggles this inspection aid; uncheck it to show the full figure. Leaving Axes restores the ordinary preview. Emphasis is never saved or exported.
The footer has Export → PNG / SVG and Copy to clipboard → PNG / SVG. Both use the latest valid settings and full export width, regardless of inspection zoom/pan/emphasis. Copy writes an image, not SVG source text. PNG needs secure-context clipboard support and permission. SVG image copying is offered only when the browser reports support; receiving applications may still reject SVG, so use PNG copy or download SVG instead. If copying fails, allow clipboard access and retry, or use Export. Successful copying confirms an API write; verify the paste in your receiving application. Successful download activation says download started; check the browser’s Downloads list. Downloads remain available independently of clipboard access. Safari versions that report no image/svg+xml clipboard support cannot copy an SVG image: use PNG copy or Export → SVG. SVG support in a preview browser release does not establish support in the installed stable version. Menus support pointer selection, keyboard arrows/Home/End and Enter, and dismiss with Escape or an outside click.
Export width controls SVG document dimensions and PNG resolution, preserving vector geometry and aspect ratio. The default is 2400 px; the width selector offers 1200, 1800, 2400, 3600, 4800 and 6000 px within 32 megapixels and 16384 px height. Ratios include square, landscape, portrait and Custom positive width:height values from 1:10 to 10:1. Ratios apply to the entire figure, not equal x/y data-unit scaling. Very wide figures leave less vertical space for text and legends. Preview scaling does not establish printed readability.
Ranges, axes and ticks#
Each axis offers:
- Original calibration: the accepted reference-value span; image borders do not infer limits.
- Data: full-precision extents of included points and source data for included fits, excluding fit extrapolation. Independent Padding mode controls expansion at each end: Percentage (default 5), Axis units, or a whole count of explicit Minor-tick intervals. Zero is valid. Percentage on log axes expands in log₁₀ space; the other modes are unavailable there. Minor-interval padding needs positive custom minor spacing even if its marks are hidden. Constant linear values receive a scale-aware starting span; true zero uses calibrated span where available, otherwise ±0.5. Constant logarithmic data retains ±0.1 decade.
- Custom: exact finite, increasing minimum/maximum limits; log limits must be positive. Reverse direction is separate. Invalid limits remain editable and recoverable.
Horizontal axis position offers Auto / Bottom / At y = 0; Vertical axis position offers Auto / Left / At x = 0. Presets use Auto: zero placement when the perpendicular displayed range is linear and spans both signs; otherwise Bottom/Left. Explicit zero placement requires zero inside the perpendicular linear range, including a boundary. It never changes calibration or ranges. The actual axis, ticks and numerical labels move together. At crowded crossings, horizontal labels take priority and colliding vertical labels are omitted; tick positions and marks remain. Axis titles stay outside the plot.
Axis layering in Figure defaults to Behind data for new and older settings; In front of data moves axes, ticks and the optional frame above points, connections and fits. Grids stay behind data and clipping remains unchanged. The optional frame adds missing edges without duplicate ticks.
Expand Tick positions for automatic or custom major spacing and independent minor spacing. Linear intervals use graph units and a tick origin. Log major intervals use decades with a positive origin; log minor choices include factors 2–9 or 2/5. Density limits are 500 major / 1000 minor ticks. Tick visibility and grid visibility are independent. Precision offers Automatic, Decimal places (0–15) or Significant figures (1–15). Manual positions remain exact: every accurately representable major label is displayed, without automatic label-count sampling. Labels that would duplicate a rounded value or misrepresent a tick are omitted, not moved; increase precision to label those positions. If requested labels overlap, GraphX asks for wider spacing, smaller text or a wider/taller figure instead of silently thinning them. Deliberate suppression of colliding labels at zero crossings is retained. Very dense requested marks can take longer to render. These presentation choices never refit data or change coefficients.
Fonts, backgrounds and saved settings#
Latin Modern SVG lettering becomes vector paths using bundled licensed fonts; equations remain vector MathJax glyphs. SVG retains a document title and description, but outlined lettering is not editable/searchable as ordinary text. Sans-serif uses Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif from the receiving system and may vary between machines. Sans-serif equations use compatible New Computer Modern maths, not Arial glyphs. Ordinary Latin Modern text supports μ/µ and many scientific symbols, not arbitrary Unicode: an unsupported character blocks SVG with its character/code point and recovery advice. Replace it or choose Sans-serif; PNG remains available with system fallback for unsupported characters. Preview and PNG use the same resolved figure layout. Independent viewers can differ; verify the receiving application before relying on a specific appearance.
Figure background offers White (default), Transparent, and Custom colour using the standard picker and six-digit hex field. The choice fills the complete figure, including the plotting area and margins, consistently in preview, SVG, PNG and supported image copying. Transparent leaves both areas transparent; the preview checkerboard is not exported. The chosen custom colour is remembered when switching to White or Transparent. Both presets and explicit preset resets use White; older projects retain their saved White/Transparent choice or default to White when absent. Active background choices contribute to Custom detection. Legend backgrounds remain independent in Labels: a transparent legend reveals the figure beneath it. Background choices and interface theme do not automatically recolour text, axes, grids, series or legends; use their existing styling controls as needed.
Settings are saved with the project. Existing explicit sizes are retained through a one-time conversion to width-relative sizing; older report-sizing fields load as equivalent relative sizes without restoring their former controls. Missing legacy title size retains its old fallback, and missing font retains system Sans-serif and its previous maths treatment. Old projects without axis-position fields retain edge axes until changed or reset. Saved shared grid colours migrate to both levels; explicit independent values take precedence. Saved axis colours are preserved. Older per-fit equation/R² choices become global legend options, with explicit global values taking precedence.
For older conflicting inclusion choices, an explicit saved clean-plot choice wins once; absent plot entries inherit the main Export flag. Subsequent edits use the shared flags and are not overwritten by migration. This can change the main export selections of an older conflicting file. CSV never contains fitted curves. PDF retains its existing source-dataset/points context for an included fit even when that dataset's export checkbox is off.
On iPhone/iPad, asynchronous plot export first prepares a file; Save plot opens the native share/save sheet. Changing the figure invalidates the prepared file; export again for the latest version. Cancelling the share sheet does not overwrite a project. Opening, previewing and downloading alone do not mark the project changed; settings and inclusion edits do.
See Export overview for shared inclusion and ordering, JPEG export for annotated source images, and Saving and opening projects for retaining editable settings.
